Literature has been taught as a discipline at Murdoch University since its foundation. In 1975, Murdoch’s first literary studies programme was called ‘World Literature’ and was located within the School of Human Communication. The main objective of the programme was to ‘give the student a thorough understanding of the general history and development of world literature on a comparative basis.’ The following year the programme changed to ‘World Literature and Literary Theory’, then to ‘Comparative Literature’ in 1979 and to ‘English and Comparative Literature' in 1985. Since 1999, it has been called ‘English’ and students ‘are exposed to a wide range of literary, non-literary, theoretical, dramatic, electronic and other kinds of text, with an emphasis on critical understanding and practical production’.
In addition to acquiring texts directly related to the University’s English programme, the Library also collects literature more widely – this includes the winners (and shortlisted authors) of major national and international literary prizes. The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is one of the world’s most prestigious awards. Now in its thirty-seventh year, the prize aims to reward the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. The winner of the Man Booker Prize receives £50,000, plus the winner and the shortlisted authors are guaranteed a worldwide readership and a dramatic increase in book sales.
