City Policy

Sustainability and Cities cover page

Murdoch University Library has been actively collecting in the broad area of City Policy since 1975 and City Policy streams are offered in both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Particular impetus for these courses came with the establishment of the Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy (ISTP) in 1988. The Library’s collections have been developed to support these courses.

The ISTP is a very productive research organization with high academic output in the form of books, reports, conference papers and refereed journal articles in print and/or electronic format. As you will see in the Display, publications of ISTP academics are well represented, although only those in print format are on display.

City Policy at Murdoch University focuses on current policy issues in the urban environment, both globally and locally. Overall the Library aims to keep up with key publication in this field. Specific areas of focus include the following:

  • Cities and Sustainability - The expansion of publication in this area has been notable.
  • Transport planning - Murdoch University’s Institute for Sustainability and Technology Policy is at the forefront of publication on issues relating to automobile dependence and its associated problems and solutions.
  • social capital and social exclusion
  • inequalities between and within cities
  • water and waste management issues
  • creativity and the role of culture in city revitalization
  • the interplay between city technology, professional practice and community values
