What do facial disfigurement, alcoholism, empathy and the Internet have in common? If you answered “A hard night on the town” you might be only partly correct. All of these subjects have been put under the microscope of Psychology, which was once aptly named in a book title (which our collection holds) as “the science of mental life”.
Whilst psychology has turned its attention upon everything from nirvana to nothingness and the psychology of dress, it has frequently sort to examine some of the more difficult issues for mankind. Helplessness, psychosis, anxiety, terrorism, personality disorders and panic are problems that confront individuals and society, and to which psychology seeks to provide some answer to.
Can you control your own depression? Can simple eye movements help trauma? Do stories help relieve suffering? Could a computer do therapy? You will find these questions raised within the books of this display. Whether you will find the answers is a little less certain.
Developments in many treatments have occurred over this 30-year period. Behaviour therapy has been advanced; the use of metaphor has been rediscovered; cognitive-behaviour therapy applied to a wider range of human difficulty; and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing invented. In the Library collection you will even find a text examining the healing powers of dolphins.
