Library Role Statement
| The Library’s role is to use its expertise in the discovery, acquisition, management and delivery of information resources to participate in the development of effective learning, research, and community service environments |

To extend knowledge, stimulate learning, and promote understanding, for the benefit of the community
Values
Murdoch University is committed to providing an educational environment that fosters an open, critical, equitable and participatory approach to teaching and learning, and thus promotes intellectual independence and the best civic attributes in its graduates.
A rigorous, analytical and holistic approach to the various forms of knowledge within a sustainable framework will be encouraged through interdisciplinary courses of study, sound scholarship, academic freedom, and high quality, innovative research that is sensitive to contemporary issues.
The Murdoch University community will abide by the values of integrity, tolerance and mutual respect.
University Goal
1. To provide quality contemporary education which empowers the students of today to live and work in the world of tomorrow.
University Key Strategies
- To provide a student-centred learning environment for all students.
- To provide coursework curricula that are pedagogically sound, academically coherent, robust and relevant for society and the learner.
- To enable graduates to achieve good employment outcomes.
- To enhance the educational quality of courses and the teaching and learning experience.
- To provide ongoing learning opportunities for graduates and the community.
Library Key Strategies
- To support the university’s teaching and learning programs through the provision of relevant information resources in formats which enable flexible delivery
- To provide services and facilities to benefit students and staff wherever they are
- To provide programs to students and staff enabling them to utilize information resources and systems efficiently and in accordance with copyright and other requirements
- To evaluate the library’s performance against expectations on a continuous basis
- To enable graduate access to library facilities, collections and services at all campuses, and from off-campus
- Enhance access to electronic resources and services
- To inform the University community about copyright issues which affect teaching and learning, and enable compliance with relevant regulations
- Establish a learning commons for first year students by 2006

2. To contribute to the knowledge, wellbeing and sustainability of society by conducting high quality multidisciplinary research and development.
University Key Strategies
- To focus research into areas of recognised and growing strength.
- To strengthen postgraduate research.
- To extend existing research relationships, and foster new ones, with external partners.
- To exploit Murdoch University’s existing and potential intellectual property, technology transfer, and commercialisation.
Library Key Strategies
- To acquire information resources relevant to areas of growing and recognized research strength, while improving access to other research resources held elsewhere
- To provide targeted in-depth programs to enable postgraduate students and staff to navigate the variety of research information resources available
- To work with selected external partners to improve collections and services aimed at researchers
- To raise the Library’s profile within the Murdoch research community
- To improve our understanding and knowledge of academic and postgraduate research activities
- To work with other relevant institutions to encourage alternative methods of scholarly publication aimed at increasing access to scholarly resources<
- To provide the research community with relevant information about copyright issues

To engage with communities in the Rockingham-Kwinana and Peel Region and the sphere of influence of our campuses to build productive partnerships in order to expand community participation in lifelong learning, support the sustainable development of the region through relevant social and scientific research, and enrich the cultural life of the community.

- To actively promote the vital importance of and the benefits and relevance of higher education and training for those seeking careers in a knowledge economy.
- To maximize opportunities for increased collaboration with Rockingham-Kwinana and Peel community organisations, industry and government agencies.
- To support key research initiatives which have significant strategic value to, and will provide the impetus for, sustainable developments and activities in the Regions.
Library Key Strategies
- To enable appropriate access to library facilities, collections and services at all campuses, and from off-campus
- To work with partners in the Rockingham Regional Campus Community Library to enhance library services to the region
- To work with Mandurah Senior College and Challenger TAFE to implement an integrated library service for staff and students of the Peel campus
- To extend existing community partnerships and develop new ones across all campuses.

Library Key Strategies
- To identify and act on opportunities for generating additional income or reducing expenditure (eg through development of strategic partnerships)
- To review staff and student opinion of new and continuing library systems and services, and take appropriate responsive action
- To review library work processes on a continuous basis, consulting staff at all levels
- To review and develop staff skills and needs
- To foster community spirit within the Library (and the University)
- To enhance the Library’s physical environment to benefit staff and students, and provide appropriate storage for collections
