Subject and Liaison Librarians

Information Services

The subject librarians are available to assist you in using the Library's resources to find the information you need.
They provide reference services from the Reference Desk and more specialised services from the subject offices. These offices have an open door policy, but you may make an appointment if the librarian you want to see is not immediately available.

Liaison librarians have overall responsibility for library services to each of the University's divisions or to specific schools. Divisional liaison librarians provide reference services within the divisions half a day per week, where they are available to assist staff and postgraduate students with their library research, demonstrate resources and answer questions about the Library's services. The liaison librarians can be contacted in the subject offices outside of these times.

Research Skills Training

Subject and liaison librarians conduct an extensive research skills training programme including:
  • Formal participation in School courses throughout all years of study
  • Database demonstrations
  • Written tutorials and guides for electronic products
  • Guides for finding subject resources
  • Orientation tours
  • Participation in the Library's Information Skills programmes in the use of tools to locate resources in the Library and via the Internet.

Selection and Collection Development

Subject and liaison librarians are responsible for selection of books, journals and other resources in the Library, electronic resources held on Library computers, and the creation of Subject Guides and the selection of recommended internet sites.
Selection is based upon the Library's Collection Development Policy. Academic staff are invited to make selection suggestions via the Library's Acquisitions Proposal Form which is also available from their Schools' or Divisions' offices, the Library Information Desk or the Subject librarians' offices.
Suggestions for purchase are also accepted from all Library clients and can be made via the suggestion menu on the Library catalogue or to the subject librarians.
