Off Campus Access to Databases and E-Journals

What Can You Access from Off Campus?

Murdoch University Staff and Students may access most of the Library's databases and e-journals from off campus locations.

  • Any database marked (Murdoch IP / Proxy) may be searched from off campus using the Library's proxy.
  • Most e-journals listed in the Library Catalogue.
  • The Library Portal

Note:

  • Databases or e-journals marked (Password) require a login and password for access. Contact the Reference Desks for details.
  • Databases marked (On Campus) or (Library Only) cannot be accessed from off campus.
  • Web of Knowledge databases require a specific setup. See Web of Knowledge access for instructions on setting up access.
  • Alumni members can also access the ProQuest database from off campus. To gain access you will need a Library User ID and Pin.

How To Connect to a Database or e-journal via the Proxy:

  1. Select the resource you wish to access from the Databases pages, the Library Portal or in the Library Catalogue.
  2. The following screen will be displayed. If you are a Murdoch student or staff member, enter your Murdoch Username and password. If you are an Alumni member or OUA student, enter your Library User ID and Library PIN. See Instructions for setting up your Library PIN.
  3. Borrower Verification Screen

  4. Click on Submit, and you will be connected to the database.
  5. If you are using the Library Portal you will be prompted to login when you connect to full text resources using the Find It button.

Known Problems and Solutions

  • Factiva
Sometimes it is necessary to delete cookies in order to access Factiva. Click here to delete your Factiva cookies.
  • Other resources - clearing the cache/deleting cookies and temporary internet files
In some cases access problems may be solving by clearing the cache of your browser or deleting cookies and temporary internet files.
  • Lexis
If you are connecting to Lexis using Internet Explorer 5 or 6, you must have the privacy settings in your browser set to low. To check this, go to Tools, Internet Options and click on the Privacy tab. Move the slider to Low, click Apply, and OK.

Students who use the Student Network modem dialup facility to connect to the Internet usually do not need to connect to the Gateway to access databases, but if they wish to search LexisNexis, they should first connect to the Gateway, connect to Lexis, and then disconnect from the Gateway (this will not disconnect them from Lexis).
  • Web of Knowledge
The Library is currently experiencing problems with off campus access to Web of Knowledge resources (Web of Science, Current Contents Connect, and Journal Citation Reports). Please go to Web of Knowledge access for instructions on setting up access.
  • Wiley Interscience
Sometimes PDF documents will not open after clicking on the 'PDF full text' link in Wiley. In this case, right-click on the full text link, choose 'Open in new window', then click on the full text link in the new window.
  • PDF files not loading properly in Proquest
When downloading a pdf file in Proquest, you may sometimes get a blank screen even though the browser indicates the document is "done". If this happens, it may help if you configure your web browser to use Acrobat Reader as a a helper application. When the Reader is configured as a helper application, the PDF file displays in a separate Reader window. Instructions on how to do this are available at the Adobe website, or check the help screens within Adobe Acrobat Reader.
