TVNews and RequestTV are licenced databases that provide access to all programs broadcast by the free-to-air TV channels.

All programs on the free-to-air channels have been recorded 24/7 since late 2007; programs from any one day’s broadcasting are usually available by the next. Links to specific segments in the TVNews database can be made from a unit’s LMS site. Material in either database can be delivered via Lectopia.

The TVNews and RequestTV databases are made available to staff and students of the University under the University’s Screenrights licence.

What is the difference between TVNews and RequestTV?

TVNews is specifically dedicated to approximately 50 television news, current affairs, and documentary programs recorded from all the free-to-air TV channels; it is updated daily. Rather than entire programs, TVNews is a collection of individual segments from each program; if you want only one specific story from, for instance, Foreign Correspondent you can download it from TVNews – if you want the whole program you can get it on DVD from RequestTV.

Using the TVNews database enables staff of the University to:

link from LMS to segments of any free-to-air television news or current affairs program, and selected documentaries, that have been broadcast since late 2007;
copy segments from the TVNews website (to DVD, thumb-drive, laptop, etc) to play in a lecture that is to be recorded in Lectopia (details of the broadcast must be logged in the copyright management tool for that lecture); and
upload segments to Lectopia using the Upload to Lectopia Request Form.

RequestTV records all programs shown by the free-to-air TV channels and makes them available for purchase on DVD within a day or so of broadcast – if you want the whole of an episode of Foreign Correspondent or Home and Away, a copy of King Kong or No Direction Home, you will find it in the Request TV catalogue.

The DVDs can:

be borrowed by any Murdoch University student or member of staff;
be copied for external students;
be played during a lecture that is recorded in Lectopia; and
be uploaded to Lectopia; use the Upload to Lectopia Request Form

How do I?

For TVNews, you need to find the particular programme you want, click on the Complete Record, and copy the url that’s shown in the To cite this article information into the LMS.

Copy a program to my computer

When you find the program that you want click on the link to the video found at the bottom of the record. On the next page you then get an option to save the video.

Order a DVD from RequestTV for the Library’s collection

Go to RequestTV from the Journal Articles & Database pages.
Enter the title of the program you want in the search box.
When you find the program, select Order on DVD and fill in the pop-up form.
Clicking Order at the bottom of the form will complete the procedure.
You will receive an email confirming the order; the Library will be notified.

Upload a segment from TVNews to Lectopia

Find the segment you want in the TVNews database.
Copy the URL.
Download and complete the Unit Coordinator’s section of the Upload to Lectopia Request Form (you will tick TVNews as the ‘source of the recording’, and give the URL of the specific segment).
Deliver the Form to the Enquiry and Loans Desk in your campus library.
You will be emailed when the upload has taken place.

Upload a DVD from RequestTV to Lectopia

Download and complete the Unit Coordinator’s section of the Upload to Lectopia Request Form.
Deliver the Form and the DVD to the and Loans Desk in your campus library.
You will be emailed when the upload has taken place.
