Using Library Services For External Students

Getting an ID/Library Card

If you wish to come into the library to borrow material, you will need a Murdoch ID/Library card. This card can also be used for photocopying and printing in the Library and for Enhanced Internet Access (through the Student Network).

If you live in Perth Metropolitan area, come to the IT Service Desk Counter just inside the Murdoch Campus Library entrance, or to the Helpdesk at Rockingham Campus Library. The staff will take your photograph and produce your card. This service is available whenever the Library is open, apart from Study Hall hours.

If you live more than thirty aerial kilometres from the Murdoch Campus, please forward an ID/Library Card application form to IT Service Counter, Murdoch University. Allow 2 weeks for processing this application. If you have any questions please contact the IT Service Desk on 93602000.

OUA students do not require a Murdoch ID/Library card unless they plan to borrow in person from Murdoch Library. These OUA students may request their ID/Library card either in person or by submitting an ID/ Library Card application form.

Eligibility for External Library Delivery Services

External Library Delivery Services are available to students who fulfil the following criteria:

  • You are enrolled in external mode for all units.

  • You live more than 30 aerial kilometres from Murdoch University's Murdoch Campus (in or further away than Kallaroo, Woodvale, Gnangara, Henley Brook, Herne Hill, Glen Forrest, Illawarra, Jarrahdale, and Warnbro)

We do recognise that some students who would not normally be eligible for this service have special needs and are unable to use the library in person or via the Internet. Please contact the Library External Services staff to discuss your situation.

In addition some Students with a Disability registered through Equity are eligible for External Library Services.

Students enrolled in Murdoch’s Elite Athletes Program are eligible for External Library Services

OUA students enrolled in unit(s) at Murdoch University are eligible for External Library Services.

Delivery and Return of Material

Loaned Items

Items are normally sent by mail.  Parcels and letters to the north-west of Western Australia or to other states are sent by express post or by courier. Advise us if there is a quicker method of delivering these items to you and inform us of any difficulties that you may have in returning books (especially recalled items) due to mailing delays.

Overdue and recall notices are computer generated and not handled by the Library External Services staff. Remember to check your email regularly as recalled items must be returned immediately.

You can also use My Library to check for overdue items, renew items and place holds.

Loaned items may be returned using the Business Reply Post address label included with each parcel of books.

Borrowing

If you are not eligible to use the External Library Delivery Services, you will need to come to the Library to borrow material. Some external students enjoy using the Library in person when visiting Perth. If you borrow books in person, you may request business reply post mail labels to use when returning your books to the Library.

Library Cards

To borrow you must have a current Murdoch University ID card, commonly called a ‘Library card’. The card should not be lent to anyone else as you are responsible for any loans issued on your card. Make sure you notify the Library immediately if your card is lost, so that a block can be placed to prevent anyone else using it. Let us know if you then find your card. Replacement cards cost $10.00.

Loans

Take your library card and the items you want to borrow to the Self Check machines near the Enquiry & Loans Desk and follow the instructions there. If you have queries or problems ask at the Enquiry & Loans Desk nearby. Return your loans through the chutes near the Enquiry & Loans Desk. Note that any item you borrow may be recalled and you will then have to return it sooner.

Loan Limits

Recalls

Nearly all items borrowed are subject to recall. This allows everyone access to library collections. You are notified by email if an item is recalled, and have 7 days to return it. This "7 days" does not apply to items already overdue.
Note: Penalty points accrue at 10 points per day overdue.
You can recall items that are on loan to another borrower. You do this through the library catalogue.
There is a limit to the number of items that you can have recalled at any one time - please see your limit in the Loan Limits table above.

Penalty Points and Fines

Penalty points and fines apply if the item is lost, damaged or not returned. If an item becomes overdue, penalty points accrue and are added to your record when the item is returned. Points accrue at the following rates:

  • 4 week loan = 1 point per day overdue
  • Semester loan = 1 point per day overdue
  • Recalled loans = 10 points per day overdue from the due date
  • 1, 3 and 7 day loans = 10 points per day overdue
  • Reserve Loans = 10 points per hour overdue
  • If borrowed items are not returned within 6 weeks of the due date, you will be billed for the cost of replacement.

If you accrue 200 or more penalty points in an academic year, your borrowing rights will be suspended until you pay a fine of $20.00. After payment your points are reset to zero. After a second fine in an academic year your points will be reset to 100 and after a further fine to 190. Penalty points are reset to zero every year if they remain below 200.

Renewing loans

You can renew your loans by logging in to My Library. There is a limit to the number of times an item can be renewed - please see your limit in the Loan Limits table above. If an item you have on loan is recalled by someone else you cannot renew it. Once the maximum number of renewals is reached, the item must be returned to the Library. You may then re-borrow it if no one else wants it.

DVDs and Videos

DVD and Video collections are available at each Campus Library.
