Access databases and ejournals

You can access electronic materials from any computer which has access to the internet, including any computer in the Library.
Use the Library's Databases pages to find appropriate database resources, by using the 'Browse by Subject Area' categories and descriptions.
If you already know which journal title or database you wish to access, you can search the Library catalogue by title to find the link.
If you are accessing these resources from off campus using your own ISP, you will need to login using your Murdoch Username and Password.
For more information, check the Library's website.

Access databases off campus

Many of the Library's databases can be searched from off campus, subject to some restrictions. Some databases can only be accessed if you are using a Murdoch student or staff account. Others require a password. The type of access you will have is indicated in the notes for each database on the Databases pages. Access options include:
  • Murdoch IP / Proxy: If you use your own Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will be directed through the Library's Proxy system and will be prompted for your student or staff number and Murdoch Password. If you are using your Murdoch student or staff network account, you will automatically have access to these databases.
  • Murdoch IP / Proxy: CONFIGURATION REQUIRED: If you connect to the Internet using an Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will need to configure your browser to use the Library's Proxy Service before you can access this database. See the instructions on configuring your browser for details. Once this is done, you will be prompted for your student or staff number and Murdoch Password. If you are using your Murdoch student or staff network account, you will automatically have access to these databases.
  • Murdoch IP: Access is only available if you are using your Murdoch student or staff internet account.

Borrow material from other University libraries

As a current Murdoch student or member of staff, you may become a reciprocal borrower at the other university libraries across WA and Australia. See Western Australian University Libraries Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme for information on how to apply for borrowing rights and details about special rules and conditions that apply to each library. For other WA libraries, take your current student or staff card to the library, and they will add you to their system. If your card does not indicate that you are currently employed or enrolled, you will need some evidence that this is the case. For other Australian libraries, further information is available at University Library Australia.

Your personal details on the Library system are derived from the student record system, as they are for most of the other systems at Murdoch. To change your personal details on this system, use MyInfo. These changes will be made available on the Library system the day after you make the changes on MyInfo. The exception to this is the Library PIN, which you should change using

Find journal articles on a topic

Use one of the Library's Databases to find journal articles on your topic. The databases can be accessed from the Library's homepage. Some of the databases will give you the full text of the journal articles, while others will give you an abstract and information on which journal your article has been published in. If you are not sure which one to use, select a subject area from the Databases web page and browse through the list, or contact the staff at the Reference Desk.

Get passwords for databases and electronic resources

Very few library resources require logins and passwords.
In most cases, these logins and passwords are available from the passwords list (Murdoch username and password required).
Some passworded resources are available for Murdoch University staff and postgraduate and honours students only. Contact the staff at the Reference Desks at the Murdoch or Rockingham Campus Libraries in person, by phone on 08 9360 6838, or by email using our Ask a Librarian service for details.
The entries for resources on the Journal Databases pages will indicate if a password is required. Check the More Info notes for these resources to find out how to obtain the required details. The entries for passworded resources in the Library's catalogue provide direct links to the resources as well as information on how to obtain the passwords.
Please contact the staff at the Library's Reference Desks if you need further assistance.

Open pdf documents

Many of the documents on the Library's website, including exam papers and Electronic Course Materials, are in pdf format, and require the Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have this on your computer you can download it from the Murdoch University ftp server (download the latest Windows or MacIntosh version) or you may borrow a cdrom with the software from the IT Service Desk Counter.

If you experience problems viewing or printing a pdf document, check the following:
  • Problem: pdf file does not open or opens and is blank - try the following options.
    • Make sure have the latest version of Acrobat Reader, or another PDF reader installed.
    • Try using a different browser (it is recommended to have both Internet Explorer and Firefox) and have the most recent version available (Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox).
    • In some cases access problems may be solved by clearing the cache of your browser or deleting cookies and temporary internet files. In Firefox go to Tools then Clear Private Data making sure the Cache checkbox is ticked. In Internet Explorer 7, choose Tools and then Delete Browsing History.... Restart your browser after this has been done.
    • Check your internet cache is set to 1024 megabytes. This setting should be enough to download and view a pdf document assuming there is the disk space to do so. In Internet Explorer 7 under Tools > Internet Options > General Tab > choose the Settings tab beneath Browsing history. In Firefox go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network ...
    • It may help if you configure ....
      • Adobe Reader go to the drop down menu Edit > Preferences … choose Internet and uncheck the box which says Display pdf in browser.
      • Acrobat Reader as a helper application. When Acrobat Reader is configured as a helper application, the PDF file displays in a separate Reader window. Instructions on how to do this are available at the Adobe website, or check the help screens within Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Problem: Blank Printout
This may be caused by using the browser toolbar or browser menu to print. Use the print icon on the Acrobat Reader Toolbar instead.
  • Problem: Mirror Image or blank lines on the print out
This problem occurs with Acrobat Reader version 5. When printing, make sure that "Print as Image" is selected. If this does not solve the problem, upgrade to the latest version (Windows or MacIntosh).
  • Problem: Document not printing correctly
You may be using an outdated version of Adobe Acrobat to open the .pdf. If the Adobe Reader is out dated the pdf document will open and appear distorted, with a section of the document not being able to be seen. Download the latest version (Windows or MacIntosh)
Incorrect printing may also occur if the document is outside the set printing margins. If this is the case you can change the printing margins through print set up. Each printer has different capabilities in terms of available printing margins. If the document is outside the "available" printing margins you may need to open and print the document on a computer attached to a different printer.
  • Installing latest version of Adobe Reader
When installing the latest version it is best to completely uninstall your old version. You can do this from the control panel on a windows system. When reinstalling make sure that your browsers are closed.

Saving a pdf file

To save a pdf file, use the Save icon on the Adobe Acrobat Reader toolbar, or right click on the link to the file before you open it. From the menu, select "Save target as.." if you are using Internet Explorer, or "Save Link As.." if you are using Netscape.

Return books

  • Murdoch campus - return book chutes are located around the corner to the left of the main entrance. An after hours return chute is in the outside wall, to the left of the main entrance doors when facing the library.
All books should be returned through these chutes, with the exception of reserve material.
