EndNote Filters and
Connection Files
The EndNote software stores bibliographic references in files known as 'EndNote libraries'. You
can place references into an EndNote library by:
- Manually typing references into specific templates and then saving these to your EndNote
library. The EndNote software comes with over 20 templates for a variety of reference types
including books, journal articles, book chapters, electronic sources, conference proceedings and
audiovisual material.
- Using EndNote Filters to import references from some library databases into
your EndNote library.
What are filters and how do you use them?
- Using EndNote Connection Files to connect to, and search some databases and
library catalogues directly from within EndNote. Selected references can then be placed into your
EndNote library.

What are filters and how do you use them?
EndNote filters make it possible for you to import references
from some library databases into EndNote, by converting the references
into an EndNote compatible format.
The EndNote software includes several
hundred default filters, but many of these are for databases not subscribed to by the Murdoch
University Library, and so cannot be used.
To import references from Murdoch-subscribed databases into EndNote using EndNote filters:
- Locate the correct filter for the library database you wish to
search.
The default filters sit within EndNote's Filters Folder. As databases are often available
from more than one service provider, there will often be more than one filter
available for any one database. This can make it difficult to identify the correct filter for
Murdoch-subscribed databases. To make this easier
for you, you can download the appropriate filters for Murdoch Library databases from this page.

- Note the EndNote download instructions for the filter.
- Search the library database as usual, mark the wanted references, and then save these
to floppy disk or to your own computer's hard drive, according to the EndNote download
instructions.
- Use the Import function within EndNote to import the references into your EndNote
Library.
If a filter is not available for the database you wish to search, you may consider creating a tailor
made filter for the database in question. Refer to the EndNote Manual for further information about
how to do this.
You may also download updated filters from the Support and Services Section of the
EndNote
(ISI ResearchSoft) Web site.
What are connection files and how do you use them?
With EndNote version 3 and higher, EndNote connection files will allow you to connect to,
and search some databases and Library catalogues directly from within EndNote.
This is only possible with those databases and catalogues which are compliant with the Z39.50
communications protocol.
You need to be aware that searching some databases in this way may be rather limiting,
because you are using EndNote's simple search interface rather than the database's
own tailor made interface. For example, specialised database searching features such as online
thesaurii are not available from within the EndNote search interface. If you want
to use these specialised features, you should search the database directly and then use the
appropriate EndNote filter to import references into your EndNote library.
Please also remember that some databases require logins and passwords, and these are
obtainable from the Library's Reference Desk on showing your current University ID card.
