What is the Murdoch University Library Toolbar (LibX Murdoch)?

The Murdoch University Library Toolbar is a small piece of software that you download and install in your web browser. It was designed for Firefox and works best with this, but a version with fewer functions can be installed with Internet Explorer.

Features that can make your life easier include:

Below are some screenshots showing ways the Toolbar can be used. This is not all the possible uses. See the LibX Murdoch University Library page at the LibX site for more information. This video clip explains some features of the Murdoch University Toolbar (LibX Murdoch).

How do I get the Murdoch University Library Toolbar ?

Firefox versions 1.5 – 2.x or Firefox 3.x

Download the latest version of LibX Murdoch University Library toolbar. When the file is downloaded, click on it and follow the instructions.

If Firefox displays a message "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site...from installing software on your computer", press the button labeled "Edit Options..." and click "Allow" to add the LibX download site to the list of website from which add-ons may be installed. Then click "Ok" and visit the "Install" link again.

To uninstall The Murdoch University Library Toolbar, go to the main Firefox menu and select "Tools," then select "Add-ons," and use the "Uninstall" button. You will have to restart Firefox to complete the uninstall.

The current version of Firefox can be downloaded here.

Internet Explorer:

The Murdoch University Library Toolbar for Internet Explorer is a Beta version. If you choose to install it, be aware that some functions (eg. embedded cues, drag and drop text to Google Scholar) do not work well, and that it may cause problems with your browser.

Browser Requirement: Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher. Works best with Internet Explorer 7.0 or higher.

Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 or higher is required for the Toolbar IE installation process. It can be downloaded here, Download .Net

To install the Toolbar, you must have Internet Explorer open. Click on the download link at the top of this page, then click on the Internet Explorer version. A wizard will guide you through installation.

The Murdoch University Library Toolbar is an Internet Explorer add-on, or ActiveX control. Install the Toolbar only if you are comfortable installing ActiveX controls. You might not be able to install the Toolbar if your system administrator has disabled your ability to install ActiveX controls, if you do not have administrative privileges, or if you are using a standard user account.

If Internet Explorer attempts to temporarily block your installation of the Toolbar, click the Information bar and follow the prompts to continue. Once the "File Download - Security Warning" dialog box appears, click Open or Run to begin installing the Toolbar.

To uninstall the Toolbar, use the Windows Control Panel and follow the same steps you would take to uninstall a Windows program. Look for "LibX for IE" in your list of installed programs.

Other Browsers

Safari, Chrome, Flock and other browsers are not supported .

Some ways the Murdoch University Library Toolbar makes life easier

1. What it looks like

When installed, the toolbar looks like this:

2. Search the catalogue from your browser toolbar

You can search for books and other material in our library from your browser toolbar:

2.1 Searching by keyword, or another heading that you select:

2.2 You can combine different search headings:

3. Links to the library from things displayed in your browser

The Toolbar changes how things are displayed in the browser. It adds in links to our catalogue.

If you see these symbols, you can click on them to see whether the library has the item (or full text if it is a journal article):

a double dotted line under numbers (like this )

this shield symbol ; or

this "Find it" symbol .

Here are some examples:

3.1 ISBN linked to library catalogue

3.2 Link to library catalogue from a book at Amazon.com

3.3 Link from a journal article in Google Scholar to our fulltext databases

Note: For this to work in Google Scholar, your preferences need to be set to Murdoch University, as shown below:

4. Instant Access from Off Campus

From off campus, the Toolbar gets you straight into websites that the library pays to access, without you going through the library catalogue first. If you are at a passworded site that charges for access (like ScienceDirect), you can check whether you can go straight through the library this way:

  1. Right click anywhere on the page
  2. Select from the menu “Go to [site] via Off Campus Access” (sometimes it will say "reload [site] via Off Campus Access")
  3. If you can access it via the library, you will be asked for your Murdoch number and password.

5. And more

The Murdoch University Library Toolbar does lots of other things. You can see a list of other features of LibX Murdoch here. If you want to experiment, try highlighting some text and right clicking. Or try highlighting some text and dragging it onto the word “Scholar” at the right of the Toolbar.
