LIDDAS - Document Viewing Instructions

Netscape is not supported for this version of the LIDDAS system, so please use Internet Explorer. Some users have also experienced difficulties in using Firefox, if you also experience problems also use Internet Explorer.

At present most documents are provided in PDF format.

Some items are still provided in TIF format and to view TIF documents from LIDDAS you will need a TIF plugin for your browser.

TIF Plugins

  • Windows users can obtain a viewer from Alternatiff.

Follow the install instructions, and remember to register the software. This version is available for both Netscape and Internet Explorer, but remember that this version of LIDDAS does not support Netscape.

  • Macintosh users can use Accel ViewTIFF available from http://www.acordex.com/browseProd/VTplugin.html.

This plugin has been tested with OSX and OS9, and should work with OS8. It is available for 15 day free trial. The Library has purchased some licences, and the full version is available on request through the IT Service Desk. For further information, contact staff in Document Delivery.

Troubleshooting Viewing Multi-page TIF Documents (.TIF extension)

Most support calls about this problem have been due to a conflict caused by QuickTime, used by many at Murdoch for listening to online lectures. Upon installation, Quicktime links itself to many different types of file formats, including TIF. However, QuickTime isn't capable of handling multipage TIF file formats and thus LIDDAS users will encounter difficulties when viewing TIF documents from the document store. This is most likely the cause if you can only see the first page of your document. A minor modification to Quicktime will fix the problem.

Other problems have been reported where Macs with pre OSX do not have an appropriate viewer installed. The following step by step instructions will help with these and other problems.

These instructions and screen shots will vary slightly between versions of MS Windows and different versions of Quicktime, but are essentially the same. Some users may experience difficulties with the instructions below if not logged on to the PC with administrator or similar privileges.

QuickTime Conflict

If "QuickTime" is installed, follow the steps below to rectify the conflict.
  • Launch the "QuickTime" program from the windows start menu. (Also known as "Apple QuickTime")

  • Go to the Edit Menu
  • Select Preferences
  • Select QuickTime Preferences

  • Click on the MIME Settings button

  • Scroll down the list to find Images
  • Expand the tree by clicking on the 'plus' sign
  • Scroll down the list to find the 'TIF image file'
  • Be sure to have a blank check box beside TIF

  • Click OK
  • Test the change by opening a document from LIDDAS. If the document doesn't display, then follow the rest of this document.

Check TIF Extension Registration

  • Select 'Run' from the 'Start' bar
  • Type 'Explorer' press enter
  • Select 'Folder Options' from the 'Tools' menu (or 'View' menu)
  • Select the 'File Types' tab
  • Use the scroll bar to find the TIF entry

  • Ensure the TIF extension is related to the 'TIF Image Document' File Type. This can be seen in the previous screen shot. If a different "File Type" is displayed, Select the Change button
  • Select 'Imaging' from the list of programs

  • Press OK
  • To test the TIF viewer, simply view an electronic document attached to a request. If problems persist, please contact your IT support staff
